Last century has brought a lot of new things in the human life, but not all of them were so popular as movie. We lived in different social systems, read ideological books and believed newspapers lie. All this disappeared in the cinema wonderful darkness. Who cared about any ideology watching a movie? The inner life of emotions and ideas involved every mind and heart. People wanted to forget their hard problems, escape from dull reality into the magic world, where even the most crazy dreams come true.

The iron curtain covered the Soviet movie from the whole other world for long years. The generations have grown without knowing anything about the best works of our famous directors, without seeing faces of our popular actors and actresses. Sure, it's over my forces to open this huge world in few articles on this site. I'd like just to make a fire of interest, which would lead you to search other materials or even to try watch some of old Soviet movies or the modern Russian ones.

The same time, when Marika Rokk and Dina Durbin, Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich shined on the screens, there were our own stars here in the Soviet Union. I'll tell about two of them. Liubov Orlova ( 11.02.1902 - 26.01.1975) and Marina Ladynina ( 11.06.1908 - 10.03.2003) were the biggest stars of the black and white movie. Both of them were married with famous film directors, who made movies just for them. No matter what they told in their screen stories about, but every time people were fascinated with unforgettable songs and infectious dances. The musical movie was popular everywhere. Sometimes the history plays tricks, surprising with unexpected facts. When Marika Rokk (a German movie star, Hungarian by born) danced step in Prague in 1944 during her work in the most famous movie "My Dream Woman" , could she believe that just in the same building, with the same decorations a Soviet actress, L.Orlova, would dance her step after the war? "Vesna" (The Spring) was filmed there, too.

These actresses were from different levels of the society. Orlova was from an old noble family. Leo Tolstoy was among her far relatives, he sent her (in her early childhood) one of his books with few warm words. After revolution she should hide her roots, but nothing could destroy that charm of aristocratic nature. Orlova wanted to become a pianist and studied at the conservatoire for 3 years, then she moved to choreographic department, worked at the theatre and only in 1934 has got the great possibility to star in a musical movie "Veselye Rebiata". Every new movie just added love towards that unusually gifted woman.

M. Ladynina came to Moscow from a far Siberian village, where she started her work as a teacher at 16 years. She entered the best cinema institute without any problems and already in 1928 got a small part in a mute movie. But her fortune appeared after the meeting and marriage with a famous film director Ivan Piryev. Ladynina mostly got roles of village girls. No doubts that "happy" kolkhoz life was just a beautiful soviet fairy-tale. Well, but people liked her merry songs, cheerful look and touching love stories in every movie.
