For the most of us the fairy-tales are connected with memories from the childhood. I also liked to watch them and it's hard to find one which I don't know. The movies about wars, revolutions, collective farms and plants overflowed Soviet TV. Any kind of fantastic story gave much more pleasure for a kid's mind tired from endless propaganda. The historic of movie never would put together such different movies as these three on this page. But I'm not an expert so just my own opinion let me do and say anything I like.

"Morozko" is a tipical Russian folk fairy-tale with Baba-Yaga, Father Frost, a nice girl suffering from evil step-mother with her ugly daughter, a good boy fighting for his love and so on... Perhaps, there are more bright movies as "Snegurochka" or "Sadko", but I still love just "Morozko", remembering cinema darkness and my childish astonishment after that show with folk costumes, beautiful faces and fascinating adventures.

The movies about old times, when ladies wore long dresses, also seemed a kind of fairy-tale, especially those from other countries. The Russian classic spoiled the pleasure thanks to school program. It made us dislike any famous writer name. Sure, we changed such attitude growing older but then a story about Italian rich lady and her poor secretary made us dream about such love as in fairy-tale. High level actor's crew made "A dog in the manger" very popular. The splendid sound track and wonderful dialogues also added charm to this movie.

Quite different kind of "fairy-tale" was the movie about soviet everyday life. "Girls" was as far from real life as a true fairy-tale. This film was released on screens of our country in 1961 and became a true favourite people's comedy. The main line of the film was the story of love between two fine funny persons - the young cook Tosya and the famous woodcutter Ilya. Already in 1962 the film became the leader of film hire: more than 34 million of cinemagoers saw it in that period. Girls became popular abroad too: the film was rewarded various prizes in Film Festivals in Edinburgh, Cannes and Mar del Plata. Splendid actors of Soviet cinema Nikolay Rybnikov and Nadezhda Rumyantseva starred in the film. It is not by accident that the authors gathered so many different girls in a hostel room. Behind every girl character is her own fate, the earth-bound truth, edifying sense. We see here another peculiarity of this new comedy. It is found on the serious and profound basis. The goal of the authors is not to amuse the audience by all means; they believe power of art is in contrasts. The somber near the absurd is twice somber as well as the absurd gains something if it exists in the comedy together with lyrics, reflection, true grief and unintentional sorrow. This way enables to achieve versatility and profundity of characters, which make us return to these film more than once.

Screenplay: Nikolai Erdman, Mikhail Volpin , Director: Aleksandr Rou. Starring: Natalya Sedykh, Eduard Izotov, Inna Churikova, Georgi Millyar, Aleksandr Khvylya. Based on Russian fairytale about a boy and a girl who go through the strangest situations to be with one another. Morozko or Father Frost helps Nastenka to become happy. Baba Yaga (The Witch) and bandits add problems like always did.

Director: Y. Frid. Starring: Ì. Terekhova, Ì. Boyarsky, A. Dzhigarkhanyan, Å. Proklova, I.
Dmitriev, N. Karachentsov et al.
A comedy based on the famous play of Lope de Vega. It is rather a piquant story of naughty, hot-tempered beauty Diana and her secretary who is desperately in love with her. There are a lot of fine romantic songs. Colonna sonora

Director: Y. Chuliukin. Starring: N. Rumyantseva, N.Ribnikov, L. Ovchinnikova, I. Makarova, S. Druzhinina, Ì. Pugovkin, A. Adosin et al. It is one of the most popular films of 60-s that has taken a firm place among the “classic” Soviet comedies. A funny story of friendship and love of the young people at one of the new Soviet constructions was awarded the prizes and diplomas at the film festivals in Edinburgh, Canne and Mar-del-Plata. Girls is a comedy of characters. It is a rarity in this difficult genre.
