Demidova, L. Fedoseeva-Shukshina, A. Kaliagin, Ì. Gluzsky et al.
This dramatic tragedy is taken from the short story by Leo Tolstoy. Vasili
(Oleg Yankovsky) recalls his past love affair and marriage with Lisa (Irina Selezneva). When a piano-playing
gypsy gives Lisa music lessons, her husband becomes enraged and tries to kill him. Lisa is
accidentally murdered, and the court acquits the distraught and lonely husband for his crime
of passion.
The complex moral problems raised by a family life before the heroes keep the film in harmony
with the time of the story creation and with the present. Different time periods come into
collision both in the screen version and in the literary original. The plot is thrilling,
dynamic, interesting and original from the point of view of its cinematographic solution.
