Oleg Menshikov was
born near Moscow on the 8 of November in 1960.
Soon his family moved to Moscow and he had
possibility to visit theatre performances rather often.
After school Oleg entered the Shchukin Higher
Drama School in 1977 and was one of the best
students. At the forth year of studding Menshikov
debuted in movie "I wait and hope"
filmed in 1980, where he played a young spy Shurka.
But real glory came to him after M. Kazakov's
"Pokrov gates" and a bright role of
Kostya. There were some small episodes in famous
film directors' works. Since late 80-s O.
Menshikov has become sex symbol of Russian movie.
His ironical smile, clever eyes, nervous movements
fascinated almost every woman's heart. |

His work in London theatre with Vanessa Redgrave made him
famous over the country borders. In 1992 Menshikov
got Lorenz Olivier prize from the British Art
Academy for his role of Sergey Esenin (a famous
Russian poet). Then he had a lot of various roles
in theatre and movie. "Burnt by the Sun"
of N. Mihalkov, where O. Menshikov played NKVD
officer, got Oskar in 1995.

Starring: Julia Ormond, Richard Harris, Oleg Menshikov, Aleksei Petrenko, Marina Neyolova
The
film's action takes place over a hundred years ago, during the rule of Alexander III. 'The
Barber of Siberia' is a steam-engined, self-propelling saw-mill for manufacturing of which the
dreamer and adventurist McCracken (Richard Harris) tries to get a commission from appropriate
Russian state authorities. Jane (Julia Ormond) is dispatched to help McCracken in the disguise
of his daughter who would blackmail the officials of the Commission on Technical Innovations. On
her way she meets Cadet Andrey Tolstoy (Oleg
|
 |
Menshikov) and his comrades. Jane's Moscow
target is to be the head of the cadet
school General Radlov (Alexei Petrenko) who also happens to be
Deputy Chairman of the Commission. The General gets enamored with the beautiful foreigner.
However, her love preference is Andrey. The latter, with the fervor typical of a Russian
officer, reciprocates. The showdown takes
place in the theatre. Andrey, playing the part of
Figaro in a student production of 'The Barber of
Seville', overcome by jealousy, attacks Radlov
directly from the stage. Unfortunately for Andrey, the performance is attended by Czarevich
Mikhail and Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich (Yevgeny Steblov), and Tolstoy ends up being accused
of an attempt on their lives. The shackled former cadet is sent to Siberia, followed there by
his servant Dunyasha (Anna Mikhalkova) who is madly in love with him. Will Andrey ever see Jane
and his son.

East-West
Director:
Regis Wargnier
. Starring: Oleg
Menshikov, Sandrine Bonnaire, Sergie Bodrov Jr.,
Catherine Deneuve
This film, which was nominated for a Best Foreign Film Oscar, is a turbulent romance set
against the political backdrop of post-World War II Russia. Shortly after the war, Alexei
(Oleg Menshikov), his wife, Marie (Sandrine Bonnaire), and their son travel to Russia from France to
make a new life for themselves. But they quickly find that the situation in Alexei's homeland
isn't quite as advertised and that
|
 |
they can't leave. Sacha (Sergie Bodrov Jr.) is a young
athlete who lives in the same overcrowded apartment complex. Like Marie, he
wants to escape, while Alexei decides to make
the best out of an awful situation.
Inevitably, Marie and Alexei grow apart as Sacha and Marie grow close, but one of these characters is harboring a secret that
won't be revealed until the end. The film does double time as a thriller in that, at any time,
any of these characters could be imprisoned or killed--including French actress Gabrielle
(Catherine Deneuve). She befriends Marie during a tour of Russia and offers to help her and
Sacha
make their getaway.
