I have a
wonderful book to show: "Dona Flor
and her two husbands", by Jorge
Amado. This novel was written in
1966 and it is one of the most representative of
the smiling, joyful and magical life in Bahia,
and old colonial town
on the cost of Brazil; you can feel the sun of
this land, the passion of those people.
Flor is a young and
very beautiful lady, an impassioned lover who
suddenly is left a widow; her husband Vadinho was
a very good dancer, a gambler and
a philanderer (a sort of gigolo'), even if he was
fond of his wife: he charmed her every day with
his jokes, his happiness
and his erotic games of excellent lover. |

After
some years, during the which she gets over the
deep sorrow for the death of her husband, she
decides to get married again with Teodoro, a calm rich
druggist, who liked a calm regulated life, so
different from Vadinho. But the night before the
marriage, Vadinho's spirit
appears and reproaches hardly Flor for her
"betrayal". |
|
Flor is shocked from this
apparition, but thanking to the magical practices she
obtains that Vadinho becomes alive again only for
her, and that he can play again, with her, his
erotic games, which
Flor missed very much (Teodoro is "regular"
also about sex). But the things will became more
and more difficult for Dona Flor, and at last she
has to take a hard decision.
This novel is an
amusing story about the incredible
anthropological background of Brazil; the novel
tells by vivid colors the people's picture and
of their expressions, with the fragrance of the
nature and of the places, of the sea, of the
flowers, and with the emotions which are
able to give different and several tastes to the
reader.
