Recently I read a beautiful short tale, titled "The man who read the others' tales". It is the story of a man who, during his teens, discovered to have the natural gift to imagine the thoughts of the other people; at the beginning, he uses this gift to get over the class works of mathematics at the high school. Then, he uses it to find a good job.

But one day, suddenly, this gift disappears and the man has to leave his good job because he doesn't know how to do it by himself; he is confused, because he never had to be worried about the life, as he had lived according to the thoughts, the opinions and the ideas of the others. But he had saved enough money, and so he decides to go abroad to start a new life, in a tropical country. There he spends the first months doing nothing; the life runs serenely among those landscapes, with those people who has much to teach to him, in spite of their big daily problems. Then, the gift comes again, but this time it works with the artistic thoughts and, particularly, with the imagined tales.

The man begins "to steal" the others' tales; sometimes the true author is famous, sometimes he is not. Anyway, the stolen tales are always good, and this allows to the man to publish them with his name, earning money. This becomes his profession and, after years of such profession, he forgets he was a "thief of tales". But he has to change often the place where he lives, and also his name; so he collects several identities, until when his stealing became too popular and the real authors became a serious problem: he has to escape in the middle of the tropical jungle.

He comes again to the civilization when he learns people think he is dead during an accident; he comes with another tale stolen in the meanwhile, and because he is tired to ran up and down across the countries, he dreams about making a family. He falls in love with a mulatto prostitute, but he doesn't understand his same feelings until he is almost losing her.

It happens that an author of his first stolen tales reaches this man and, this time, he is imprisoned; but luckily not for much time. When he is out of the prison, he tries to publish his first tale, written by himself during the imprisonment; but at that time, everybody knows him as a thief of tales, and then he can't publish the only tale really of him. The man will down and out, with no trust in life, and he feels the need of a dear person by his side, then looks for that prostitute and after he has found, he will discover she had loved him too and still she does.

All the tale shows several aspects of the magical customs and practices of a tropical country, and often those magical practices are an important part of the story. Unfortunately, it is not easy to find this book.........it is mine.
